Two cells that measure the same are not automatically interchangeable. Voltage, chemistry, maximum discharge current and internal resistance all affect whether a substitute works — and in some devices, whether it is safe.

Lithium and lithium-ion cells in particular must never be fitted into a device or charger designed for a different chemistry. Rechargeable cells require a charger matched to their chemistry.

The figures on this site are nominal reference values. Manufacturers vary, specifications change, and published figures can be wrong. Where your device manual or the cell manufacturer disagrees with this site, follow them, not us.

Do batteries with the same dimensions always work in the same device?

No. Two cells can share a footprint but differ in voltage, chemistry or maximum current. Always check what the device manual asks for before substituting.

Why does one battery have so many different codes?

Manufacturers and standards bodies each maintain their own naming schemes. The IEC code, the manufacturer code and the retail code often all describe the same physical cell.
