AGM vs lead-acid batteries
AGM is a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid design with the electrolyte absorbed into a glass mat: spill-proof and maintenance-free, at a higher price.
AGM is not an alternative to lead-acid; it is a kind of lead-acid. The difference is that the acid is held in a glass mat rather than sloshing about as liquid, so the battery is sealed, cannot spill, needs no topping up with water, and can be mounted at odd angles. It also handles vibration better and charges faster. A flooded battery is cheaper and, if you are willing to maintain it, will do the same job in a stationary installation.

The naming causes the confusion
People say “AGM or lead-acid” the way they might say “saloon or car”. Both are lead-acid. The useful comparison is AGM against flooded, which is the traditional liquid-filled type.
Sealed changes where it can go
No free liquid means no spill, no venting of acid mist in normal use, and no restriction on mounting angle. That is why AGM took over in vehicles with the battery inside the cabin or boot, and in boats.
Charging is not identical
AGM generally wants a slightly lower absorption voltage and dislikes being overcharged, which cooks off electrolyte it cannot replace. A charger with an AGM setting is worth using rather than a generic one.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
