NiMH vs lithium-ion batteries
NiMH is 1.2 V and fits household sizes; lithium-ion is 3.6 V and is built into devices designed for it. They rarely compete for the same slot.
You will seldom pick between these, because they are not sold for the same slot. NiMH is the rechargeable that fits ordinary AA and AAA compartments at 1.2 volts. Lithium-ion runs at 3.6 volts and lives inside phones, laptops, tools and torches designed around it. Lithium-ion stores far more energy for its weight, which is why anything portable and modern uses it. NiMH is more tolerant of abuse and does not need protection electronics.

Why lithium-ion won portable electronics
It stores two to three times the energy per gram. For a phone or a laptop that is the whole argument, and it is why nothing ships with NiMH any more unless it needs to accept standard cells.
Why NiMH survives
It fits the AA and AAA shape at a voltage ordinary devices expect, it tolerates being over-discharged far better, and it needs no protection electronics. For a device that must accept whatever the owner puts in it, that robustness matters more than density.
The look-alikes are not an exception
Lithium-ion cells exist in AA and AAA shapes — the 14500 and 10440 — but they run at 3.6 V and are not substitutes for either NiMH or alkaline. Only NiMH is a drop-in rechargeable for a household cell.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
