Same voltage, so they swap

This is the part that surprises people. A single-use lithium AA is 1.5 V, exactly like an alkaline AA, because it uses a lithium–iron disulfide chemistry chosen to match. That is not true of the 3 V lithium coin cells, which are a different thing entirely despite the shared word.

Where the money goes

Under a light load — a wall clock, a TV remote — alkaline delivers most of its rated capacity and lithium's advantage largely disappears. Under a heavy or intermittent load, alkaline voltage sags and the device reads it as flat long before the chemistry is spent. That is where lithium earns its price.

Leaking

Alkaline cells left flat in a device can vent potassium hydroxide and corrode the contacts. It is the main reason to pull batteries out of anything stored for a season. Lithium cells very rarely leak, which is part of why they are chosen for smoke alarms and emergency kit.

Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
