Why there is no firm answer

IEC 60086 names cells by chemistry and dimensions and never uses either word. “Button” and “coin” are trade language that grew up alongside it, so different manufacturers draw the line in different places.

The useful distinction

If someone says coin cell they almost always mean a 3 V lithium cell with a four-digit code where the digits are the size — CR2032 is 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. That is a genuinely different animal from a 1.5 V LR44.

Buy by the code

Because neither term is defined, neither is safe to order by. The code on the cell carries the chemistry, the diameter and the thickness, which is everything you need.

Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
