DVI vs HDMI

Both carry the same digital video signal, but DVI has no audio, no CEC and a bulkier connector. HDMI superseded it.

Quick answer

HDMI has effectively replaced DVI. The picture quality is the same where both can carry the same resolution, but DVI carries no sound, has no remote-control features, and its connector is a bulky screw-in block. DVI still turns up on older monitors and graphics cards, and it is perfectly usable — a DVI to HDMI adapter is cheap and passive because the video signal underneath is compatible. Just remember you will need a separate cable for audio.

Single link and dual link

A single-link DVI cable manages 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. Dual link doubles that to 2560 × 1600 by using more pins. They look nearly identical — count the pins in the large block, because a single-link cable in a dual-link socket simply fails at higher resolutions.

The adapter is passive

DVI-D and HDMI carry the same video signalling, so a plain adapter works with no electronics in it. That is unusual among video standards and worth knowing: you do not need to pay for an active converter here.

Watch for DVI-A and DVI-I

DVI-D is digital only, DVI-A is analogue only, and DVI-I carries both. An adapter to HDMI needs the digital pins, so a DVI-A source will not convert without a real converter.

Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
