HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1
48 Gbps against 18 Gbps, unlocking 4K120, 8K60, VRR and eARC. The 2.1 label itself guarantees none of them.
HDMI 2.1 carries a lot more data: 48 gigabits per second against 18. That is what makes 4K at 120 frames, 8K, and the better audio return possible. If you have a recent console or a high refresh rate TV, you want it. There is a catch worth knowing: the standard lets a manufacturer label a device HDMI 2.1 while supporting almost none of the new features, so the badge alone tells you very little. Look for the specific feature you need named on the spec sheet.

The label problem
HDMI 2.0 was folded into the 2.1 specification, and the features that define 2.1 are optional. A device can be advertised as HDMI 2.1 and support nothing beyond what 2.0 did. This is not a rumour — it is how the specification is written. Buy on the named feature, not the version number.
The cable matters too
48 Gbps needs an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. An older High Speed cable will often work at 4K60 and fail at 4K120, usually as intermittent black screens rather than a clean failure. Certified cables carry a QR label worth checking.
Who actually needs it
A recent console or gaming PC driving a 120 Hz TV, or anyone routing lossless Atmos through a soundbar via eARC. For 4K60 film and television, HDMI 2.0 is not a bottleneck and never was.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
