VGA vs HDMI
VGA is an analogue signal on a 15-pin connector with no audio; HDMI is digital. Converting between them needs active electronics.
Use HDMI wherever you can. VGA is an analogue standard from the 1980s: the signal degrades over distance, gets soft at high resolutions, and carries no sound. HDMI is digital, so the picture either arrives correctly or not at all. VGA persists on projectors and older office hardware, and it still works — but connecting VGA to HDMI needs a powered converter, not a simple adapter, because one is analogue and the other digital.

Why the picture looks soft
An analogue signal is a continuously varying voltage, so every metre of cable and every connector rounds it off slightly. Text on a VGA-connected monitor at high resolution goes fuzzy for that reason, and no cable quality entirely fixes it.
Converters are not adapters
There is no passive way to turn analogue into digital. A working VGA-to-HDMI box contains a chip and usually needs USB power. The cheap passive plugs sold under that name are for the other direction, or do not work at all.
Where it lives on
Meeting-room projectors, industrial panels, KVM switches and server crash carts. If you support any of those you still carry a VGA cable, and there is nothing wrong with using it at 1080p over a short run.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
