Gel vs AGM batteries
Two sealed lead-acid designs: AGM holds electrolyte in a glass mat and supplies higher current, gel sets it in silica and tolerates deep cycling but needs tighter charge control.
Both are sealed lead-acid batteries; the difference is how the acid is held. AGM soaks it into a glass mat, gel sets it into a thick paste. AGM delivers current more readily, so it is the one for starting engines and for anything with a heavy momentary load. Gel copes better with being run deep and flat repeatedly, but it is fussier to charge — too high a voltage permanently damages it. If you are unsure, AGM is the more forgiving choice.

Charging is the real difference
Gel needs a lower absorption voltage than AGM and does not tolerate being exceeded — bubbles form in the gel and never heal, permanently reducing capacity. A charger set for AGM can destroy a gel battery over time.
Current delivery
The glass mat keeps the acid in close contact with the plates and offers lower internal resistance, so AGM supplies heavy current more readily. That is why starter batteries are AGM rather than gel.
Both are still lead-acid
Neither approaches lithium for cycle life or usable capacity. The choice between them is a choice within the lead-acid family, usually made on price and on what the existing charger supports.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
