LiPo vs lithium-ion batteries
LiPo is a construction and electrolyte difference, not a separate chemistry: a pouch cell at the same 3.7 V nominal as cylindrical lithium-ion.
The honest answer is that these are not really different chemistries. LiPo is lithium-ion built in a soft foil pouch with a polymer electrolyte, instead of a rigid metal can. That lets it be made flat and in odd shapes, which is why phones and drones use it. Cylindrical lithium-ion is tougher, cheaper to make and easier to cool. Both run at about 3.7 volts and both need the same care in charging.

Why the distinction persists
The names come from how the cells are built, not what is inside them. Marketing treats LiPo as a different technology; in practice a pouch cell and an 18650 can use very similar cathode chemistry and behave alike on a charger.
Packaging drives the trade-off
A pouch fills whatever space a designer gives it, so a phone wastes nothing. Cylinders leave gaps when packed, but the can resists puncture, contains a failure better and makes cooling straightforward.
Swelling is the pouch's warning sign
A LiPo that puffs up is generating gas internally and should be retired immediately — not pressed flat, not used one more time. A swollen pouch in a phone or a laptop is a reason to stop using the device.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
