USB 2.0 vs 3.0
5 Gbps against 480 Mbps. Irrelevant for input devices, decisive for storage. USB 3.0 is now formally called USB 3.2 Gen 1.
USB 3.0 moves data about ten times faster than USB 2.0 — 5 gigabits per second against 480 megabits. For a keyboard, a mouse or a printer that makes no difference whatsoever. For an external drive or a memory stick it is the difference between a copy taking one minute and taking ten. On full-size rectangular plugs, USB 3.0 sockets are usually coloured blue inside, which is the quickest way to spot one.

The extra pins
USB 3.0 added five pins at the back of the type-A connector while keeping the original four. That is why a 3.0 plug fits a 2.0 socket and simply runs slower — the old contacts still line up.
The slowest link decides
A 3.0 drive on a 3.0 port through a 2.0 cable runs at 2.0 speed. Unmarked cables from a drawer are the usual culprit when a fast drive behaves slowly.
The naming is a mess
USB 3.0 was renamed USB 3.1 Gen 1, then USB 3.2 Gen 1. All three names mean the same 5 Gbps. Newer, genuinely faster tiers are 10 and 20 Gbps, which is why reading the number in Gbps beats reading the version.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
