USB-C vs Lightning
Lightning is Apple's proprietary 8-pin connector, largely limited to USB 2.0 speeds. USB-C is the 24-pin industry standard that has replaced it.
Lightning is Apple's own connector, used on iPhones from 2012 until the iPhone 15 and still found on some accessories. USB-C is the industry standard, and Apple has now adopted it across its range. Both are reversible and similar in size. The practical difference is speed and power: most Lightning devices transfer at old USB 2.0 rates and charge modestly, where USB-C can be far faster and carry much more power. If you are buying now, buy USB-C.

Why the change happened
European rules requiring a common charging port for small electronics settled a long argument. Apple moved the iPhone to USB-C from the 15, and accessories have followed.
Lightning was not slow by accident
Most Lightning devices run at USB 2.0 speeds — fine for charging and syncing photos, painful for moving video off a phone. The connector could have gone faster; almost no shipping hardware did.
Why Lightning connectors fail
Lightning puts its eight contacts on the outside of the plug, where they collect pocket lint and tarnish. A Lightning cable that has stopped charging is very often just dirty — the contacts and the port both clean up. USB-C recesses its pins, which is one reason it survives rougher handling.
Old cables are not wasted
Lightning accessories keep working, and Apple sells adapters. There is no reason to throw out a drawer of Lightning cables while you still own anything that takes one.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
