USB-C vs Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt 3 and 4 run over the USB-C connector, adding a guaranteed 40 Gbps, PCIe tunnelling and multi-display support that plain USB-C does not promise.
Thunderbolt is not a different connector. Thunderbolt 3 and 4 use the USB-C plug, which is why the two get confused. Thunderbolt is a set of guarantees running over that plug: 40 gigabits per second, enough bandwidth for two 4K displays, and the ability to connect things like external graphics enclosures. Every Thunderbolt port is also a USB-C port, but the reverse is not true. Look for the small lightning-bolt symbol beside the socket.

Every Thunderbolt port is a USB-C port
Plug an ordinary USB-C device into a Thunderbolt socket and it works normally. The reverse fails: a Thunderbolt dock in a plain USB-C port will either not work or lose most of its functions.
The cable counts as well as the port
Thunderbolt speeds need a Thunderbolt-rated cable, and beyond about half a metre that means an active one with electronics in the plug. A charging cable between two Thunderbolt ports gives you charging and slow data.
What the guarantee buys
Plain USB-C promises nothing about speed or displays. Thunderbolt certification means a minimum has been tested. For a dock or a monitor that must simply work, that certainty is what you are paying for.
Check before you swap. Batteries with similar dimensions are not always interchangeable. Always verify voltage, chemistry and the requirements printed in your device manual before fitting a replacement.
